Fetching the latest fire danger and ban data.
Tasmania's fire safety rules are managed by the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) under the Fire Service Act 1979. The state uses Fire Permit Periods and Total Fire Bans (TFB). Tasmania is unique for its burn registration system, its explicit ban on liquid fuel stoves during TFBs, and its 1-metre clearance requirement — the smallest in Australia.
Common activities and their restrictions.
Electric & LPG BBQs (TFB Day)
Electric stoves/barbecues and LPG (butane or propane) cookers are the only permitted outdoor cooking appliances on a TFB day. Tasmania requires only a 1m clearance — the smallest in Australia.
Campfires (Fire Permit Period, Non-TFB)
Allowed during the Fire Permit Period if NOT a TFB day. Must maintain clearance, wind under safe levels, and water source available.
Small Fires for Green Waste (<1m³, Non-Ban)
Outside of ban periods, small fires under 1 cubic metre for green waste disposal are allowed if registered with the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS).
Burn Registration Requirement
During the Fire Permit Period, small fires (<1m³) for vegetation disposal or cooking are allowed without a formal permit — but they MUST be registered with the TFS. This allows TFS to track all active fires and avoid deploying emergency resources to controlled burns.
Vegetation Burning (Permit Period)
Permits are required for any vegetation burning during the Fire Permit Period. On TFB days, all registrations are voided and no fires are permitted.
Machinery / Harvesters
Specific guidelines apply during permit periods. Spark arrester requirements must be checked.
All Solid Fuel Fires & Campfires
Strictly banned on TFB days. All existing burn registrations are voided. No fires are permitted in the open.
Liquid Fuel Stoves
Tasmania explicitly prohibits liquid fuel stoves (methylated spirits, shellite) during a TFB — a detail often overlooked. Only electric and LPG cookers are legal.
Solid Fuel BBQs
Wood, charcoal, and briquette barbecues are banned on TFB days.
All Burn-Offs & Green Waste
All vegetation burning is strictly prohibited, and all existing registrations and permits are suspended.
